The Luau
Today, we attended a Luau themed festival at Madeline's elementary school. There were several inflatable slides and jumpers, games, prizes, and food. The girls even got their faces painted.
Morning Glories
I love this picture because it truly shows how Sophie feels in the morning. Every weekday morning, I have dynamite these two out of bed so I can feed, snuggle, and groom them before I leave for work. Sophie usually scowls the whole time. She usually refuses to eat until I am gone and insists on being "covered" on the couch. On this particular morning, Madeline covered her with her own blanket and tried to comfort her. Very sweet.
Weekly Wrap-up
We really had a busy week. I had parent conferences on Tuesday and Thursday, working 9 hours one day and 11 hours the other.
Friday night, we attended Sophie's open house at preschool. We loved looking at all of Sophie's "artwork," and Madeline enjoyed seeing all of her old teachers. The school is warm, cozy and has an incredibly nurturing atmosphere. Sophie's teacher says she is easy going and an active participant in their activities. She can identify her name and most letters of the alphabet. She can also do a lovely rendition of Brown Bear, Brown which I made a video of and will post later.
Kent and I attended Madeline's conference last week. Her report card said she "shows strength in music" and "is a creative thinker." We need to continue to review sight words with her, but her teacher was impressed with her writing and use of invented spellings.

Hangin' out in Griffith Park
We spent the morning hanging out in Griffith Park with our friends Carrie, Lyman, and Milo. Madeline rode the fast ponies two times and loved it! Sophie talked a big talk before we got there, talking about how she was going to ride a little pony. But, Mommy was right. Sophie wanted no part of those pony rides. She is the sweetest kid, but not the bravest.
Riding Trains and the Carousel
After Madeline rode the ponies, we took a ride on the train and a turn on the carousel. I still haven't been able to coax Sophie onto a Merry-Go-Round pony, but she was quite happy riding on the bench next to me, and this is quite an improvement, I might add. Usually, on carousel benches, she keeps a death grip on me while covering her eyes. This time, she even smiled. She was happy on the train, but insisted on riding in my lap. Sophie is not much of a risk-taker; perhaps that will make the teen years a bit easier to deal with.
